BR Client-Server 4.2 Installation

Post by mluchterhand »

Hi, we recently purchased BR 4.2 and a new Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 Santiago 64-bit server. One of the first packages I installed was redhat-lsb.i686 to allow 32-bit applications to be run. I am under the impressions that you need BR 4.3 to run true 64-bit. Is that correct?

Anyhow, I am currently having a problem with the listener that I downloaded from ftp://ftp.brulescorp.com/Dll_Distr/BETA ... ux_lsb_32/. The brlist script runs fine and the listener automatically starts on bootup as expected. When I try to connect from a client, I am receiving "Socket Error: Connection Failed" on the client side. I am not prompted for a user name or password. When I look at the listener log on the server I see the following:

(6) - Fri Nov 30 11:08:59 2012
Log level set to 10.
(8) - Fri Nov 30 11:08:59 2012
Made new application entry for br420o
(6) - Fri Nov 30 11:08:59 2012
The configuration file /etc/brlistener.conf has been read.
(6) - Fri Nov 30 11:08:59 2012
Starting brlistener version 2.3 on port 8555. brlistener was made from br source base 4.30beta+u on 2011-11-01
(6) - Fri Nov 30 11:08:59 2012
BrListener has daemonized
(8) - Fri Nov 30 15:46:17 2012
accepting connection
(0) - Fri Nov 30 15:46:22 2012
Accepting SSL connection failed SSL_accept an EOF was observed that violates the protocol.
(8) - Fri Nov 30 15:46:27 2012
accepting connection
(0) - Fri Nov 30 15:46:32 2012
Accepting SSL connection failed SSL_accept an EOF was observed that violates the protocol.

I can not find any documentation on SSL and the brlistener. Here is what I have confirmed/tried:

Port 8555 is open on the server
brserial.dat is present in /usr/brfolder
brlistener.conf is present in /usr/brfolder and /etc
brlistener is present and executable in /usr/brfolder and /usr/sbin
A file named brserver has been placed in /etc/pam.d/. The contents of that file follow:

#%PAM-1.0
auth include system-auth
account include system-auth

For the heck of it, I did try the 64-bit listener as well. I received the same log results so I do not think the issue is isolated to the 32-bit version.

I'd appreciate any info to steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

firewall or anti-virus software???

For testing purposes, did you try disabling the anti-virus software and the firewall on the client side?

Anti-Virus/Firewall

Post by mluchterhand »

I tried with both the firewall and anti-virus disabled and received the same results. I have also tried from two separate clients, one running Windows 7 Professional and the other running Windows XP Professional.

To see what would happen, I setup the latest version of BR 4.18 on the new server. With that setup, I am prompted for a user name and password from the client. However, after providing a good username and password I receive "Network error processing authentication"

Looking at the listener log for 4.18 I see the following:

Log level set to 10.
Made new application entry for BR418
The configuration file /etc/brlistener.conf has been read.
BrListener has daemonized
waiting for connection
Made new application entry for BR418
The configuration file /etc/brlistener.conf has been read.
Looking for application BR418
Application BR418 has been found.
Starting security for /usr/brfolder/br418/brserver.script -/usr/brfolder/br418/brconfig.sys 1, with startdir /usr/brfolder/br418, anonymous =Not allowed.
befoere dosetsid
Security process has started for /usr/brfolder/br418/brserver.script -/usr/brfolder/br418/brconfig.sys 1
waiting for connection
Authenticating user.

4.18 listener also seems to populate the /var/log/messages with the following after attempted login:

Dec 4 12:33:05 brserver kernel: brlistener[6301]: segfault at 8003048 ip 0000000008003048 sp 00000000ffc2c270 error 14 in brlistener[8048000+f000]

4.2 listener does not populate /var/log/messages at all. I assume this is because it is not even prompting for the user name or password.

I was able to find out a little more about the segfault error generated in 4.18:

A segmentation fault (also known as a segfault or a segmentation violation ) occurs when a process attempts to access a memory location that it is not allowed to access, or attempts to access a memory location in a way that is not allowed (for example, attempting to write to a read-only location, or to overwrite part of the operating system). On Unix family operating systems, a signal called SIGSEGV - signal #11, defined in the system header file signal.h - is then sent to to process. The default action for SIGSEGV is abnormal termination: the process ends and an application core file may be written (depending on the system's configuration).

Neither 4.1 or 4.2 are working and I am unsure of where to turn next.
