This looks nice, Len.

Hi all,

Sorry I missed Atlanta but Atlantis was a bit more exciting.

Anyway, I signed up for Project Forum a few years ago as a Wiki possibility for my software.
They were too primitive then, but the changes page (link below) looks like it may be a contender
for a new BR forum, if that is still a possibility. And we're too busy at the moment to add any
new pokers to the fire.

I have not inspected nor compared all the old vs. new features, so if it wont work in context
for the expectations the group has, please dont shoot the messenger!

You'll notice 2 links to different pages. Dont know why that is but they came from the same
automatic email update I get periodically.

Susan - cc'd you in case there are message delivery problems going to the forum.

[BR_forum] New BR forum?

That is an interesting CMS. It seems to provide all sorts of tools for collaboration. I'm not sure it would work for our purposes, though. The software we are currently implementing is called phpBB. Check it out here:

http://www.phpbb.com/

It specifically for discussion forums. It is very close to being finished but we are still working out some of the details . We'll be making announcements and sent invitations to current mailing list members.

There are many ways Microsoft Office Live Workspace beta can make your life easier. Today, we’ll show you how to use a workspace for your next group project.

A workspace gives you a single online place where your group can store notes and schedules, and create a final report, without having to merge separate documents. It’s simple:
http://click.officeliveemail.com/?ju=fef11d77746c01&ls=fe6515717d67027e7510&m=feee1c71726d0c&l=fec31c767667067b&s=fe2d17707d60027f761676&jb=ffcf14&t=
1. Create your group workspace
Start from scratch, or use the project or study group workspace templates.

http://click.officeliveemail.com/?ju=fef11d77746c01&ls=fe6515717d67027e7510&m=feee1c71726d0c&l=fec31c767667067b&s=fe2d17707d60027f761676&jb=ffcf14&t=
2. Add your files
Install the Office Live Update to save documents to your workspace directly from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

http://click.officeliveemail.com/?ju=fef11d77746c01&ls=fe6515717d67027e7510&m=feee1c71726d0c&l=fec31c767667067b&s=fe2d17707d60027f761676&jb=ffcf14&t=
3. Share the workspace with your group
Let them view and edit the files—so everyone is always working on the latest version. Remember, you can revert to a previous version if necessary.

Sign in to create a workspace for your next group project.

This looks more like a collaboration tool rather that a discussion forum.  This is Microsoft's version of what has been done elsewhere.  They are kinda late to the game, though.  There are several development/collaboration tools that are provided as services(sourceforge provides SVN and CVS) or available for download to set up yourself.

At Sage we use SVN for this type of thing.  Web access is provided by WebSVN.  This is pretty much the standard for most open source projects on the web today.  I could set one up for the forum members to share code.  Its really an excellent resource.  It also free and open-source.

[BR_forum] New BR forum?

Post by John »

I think that’s an excellent idea Chris.  I believe that we could all benefit from a shared open-source code base which we could check out, modify and put back.  I imagine that together we could build some awesome utilities that we could all use and share, while not depending upon anyone person to do all the maintenance.  FnSnap might be a perfect fit for this.  We have to agree on a few standards which we all could deploy with, etc.

A show of hands – how many people would be interested in sharing code in this way?

[BR_forum] New BR forum?

Post by Christopher Shields »

Here's some options for setting up our own.

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2008/09 ... l-systems/

I'll have to dig up an article I was reading about hosted solutions like
Sourceforge. There are some nice alternatives.

the other night I replied to a forum message (on the forum) via my mobile phone. I thought it worked, but my message never got through. it seemed to submit just fine though. Has anyone else tried to access this brforum.ads.net with their mobile yet? Did it worked for you?

p.s. I'm going to test by replying on this thread too.
