delayed write failure
How do I prevent "delayed write failure" windows errors? I have a client who gets them often and their hardware people tell them it is a software problem.
I remember a lot of discussion on this topic but could not find any information in a search of the BR Forum... Perhaps I just don't know how to search this forum very well - but if someone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction...

Delayed Write Failure
John,
In our experience, this is usually caused by Anti-Virus software scanning every BR file processed.
Exclude your BR folders from being scanned, and probably the problem goes away, unless you have a hard disk problem.

John, is this client using Win XP? We had a discussion about this problem back in 2003 (before the new forum was built). I still have the messages saved. Gordon, Luis and Ryan Faircloth talked about it. Here are some excerpts:
GORDON: One of our customers and one of Tyrol's sporadically gets a message that data is lost because of a "delayed write failure." Once this starts, it becomes pernicious. This is an XP and 2000 error described by Microsoft, along with the remedy at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;321733
LUIS: I have been having this problem as well. It is clearly not a WB specific problem. It happens when you write a lot of data over a long period of time. One of my machines gets it so often; I finally lowered it to 10MB instead of 100MB. So far, it seems to be a windows XP issue. I would recommend calling Microsoft for assistance on this issue, the problem will get worse before it gets better, and they will troubleshoot the problem till they find a solution. I suspect there is an OS problem that still needs to be repaired, but the patch does help.
RYAN: I was able to fix the problem by turning off the offline files feature in Folder options
LUIS: I looked at that setting, I am not sure, but I think my access just got A LOT FASTER!. That is a terrible feature! [till they fix it].
RYAN: Well I use it on my laptop so it keeps all of my documents available when I am away from my LAN. You can actually turn this off on a folder by folder basis (as I do on my laptop) or entirely as I do in the case of my servers and workstations. If you and your customer are using Windows 2000/2003 server and have active directory enabled you can turn this off globally via group policy
SUSAN: I have no idea if this will help put you on the right track or not. Perhaps Doug's advice about Anti-Virus scanning is the answer. Good luck!

It is very typical for "Hardware People" to tell the user it's a software problem.
I suppose that technically they are right.
The specific problem is that you are pushing data to the server, faster than it can be written to the disk. BR is very good at pushing data!
After a while, the workstation cache becomes "Stale" and the server rejects the write.
My short answer is switch to client server, that way there is no traffic over the network.

did you have any luck?
John,
Did you have any success with any of these solutions? I have an end-user that has been receiving delayed read/write errors. I have BussinesRules! 3.9 (licensing for 4.1) as a volume share on a Netware server. I have tried several things to try to resolve this. I verified all hardware was running properly, reboot of the server, I had reduced her network speed from 1000 mbps to 100 mbps (on her network card and on the managed switch), verified that Symantec wasn’t interfering and the most recent solution I tried was to disable system caching. (She hasn’t had any issues since I did this yesterday morning.) We have about 15 other users that use BusinessRules! and only two others have mentioned receiving delayed read/write errors in the past.
Maybe someone at the conference could give me some insight on setting up a client server and help me with my printing issues on 4.1 .
I appreciate all the help.
Thanks,
Ryan

We used to be a strong Netware supporter, but they never got their Windows Driver to work properly.
As you mentioned, disabling the Cache seems to work fairly well.
Client Server is a game changer, it will require either a Linux or a Windows Server, but we experience 30 to 100 times performance improvement.
Interestingly enough, Client Server is Faster even when running directly on the server. (Just not 30 to 100 times faster).
I would say that a minimum of BR 4.2, and preferably BR 4.3 is important for client server.
BR 4.3 is almost ready for production, and provides RE-Connect, and if I remember also uses SSL to encrypt the session (The newest 4.2 might do that do, it all becomes a blur).

Honestly - I don't remember - I want to say I made them get a new computer and the problem went away... On older systems I'd look to this info:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;321733
that Gordon provided above. Additionally check out the links provided here:
http://brwiki.brulescorp.com/index.php? ... ite_failed
The 8 causes may have a few things to try you haven't yet.
I do remember this being a tricky issue to fix- Yeah that doesn't really help, I know.

Thanks!
Luis and John,
I appreciate the help!
I plan on migrating from a Netware server to a Windows server this summer. I will look at upgrading to 4.2 or 4.3. John helped me last year get all my 3.9 programs to run on 4.1. However, I’m having issues with printing on 4.1 . I'll be at the conference next month. Maybe I can pick your brains on setting up client server on Windows server 2008.
Thanks,
Ryan
